The municipality of Matola is demolishing houses built in a protected area in Matola Gare, Maputo province, arguing that it has been warning the public about illegal construction in the area for some time.
Villagers have tried to protect their structures against demolition, and municipal police and protection police officers were on hand to “control the temper” of owners.
The municipality says there will be no compensations because it had already warned residents about the illegality of occupying the areas in question.
“There are people with some documentation in the area, which has led us to question the origin of such documentation,” said Albino Magaia, Head of the Construction and Urbanisation Sector of the Municipality of Matola.
The municipality action began yesterday with the destruction of 17 of the 52 houses marked for demolition, and warns there will be more demolitions in the near future.
