Within the scope of a project for the conservation of environmental and animal protection areas in the Indian Ocean delta, Marracuene District on Saturday received a delegation from Eduardo Mondlane University headed by Dr. Juízo from the Faculty of Engineering, and Dr. Silvia Ritossa from the French Institute for Research for Development.
The visit hopes to assess and quantify environmental flows in Macaneta, gauge the social and administrative context of the wetlands, and learn about the priorities concerning the wetlands and mangroves, public spaces which are the habitat of about 400 species of birds, according to a recent study by the two visiting institutions.
These institutions are already developing similar projects in Kenya, Tanzania, Comoros and Madagascar, with funding from FFEM and WIOSAP, which is a UNEP program.
Receiving the visitors, Marracuene district administrator Shafee Sidat thanked them and expressed interest and support for the project, which he believes will “develop other forms of tourism in the district, and add more players to the protection of the ecosystem. In the end, we will all, as a country, come out winning.”
