Deputy Attorney General Amabélia Chuquela travelled from Maputo to Beira yesterday to question former Renamo deputy Sandura Ambrósio, who is being detained for allegedly providing financial support to the group led by General Nhongo, involved in attacks on civilian vehicles in the centre of the country, ‘Carta de Moçambique’ reports.
Chuquela also yesterday heard statements on the same subject from former Secretary General of Renamo, Manuel Bissopo. Bissopo is currently at liberty, but ‘Carta de Moçambique’ sources claim that he may be arrested at any time.
Today (Tuesday), and still in Beira, Deputy Attorney General Chuquela was to interview General Elias Dhlakama, brother of deceased Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama. Elias is also the target of allegations that he was providing support to General Nhongo’s self-styled ‘Military Junta’.
The three were implicated by alleged members of the ‘Military Junta’ recently arrested in Sofala. Both Sandura and Bissopo have, through their lawyers, denied any involvement.
Sandura said yesterday, at the end of his interview in the PGR offices in Beira, that he never sent money to members of the ‘Junta’, despite having been approached for that end. The former deputy is currently being held in Beira Central Prison.
