A large fire broke out this Wednesday morning at the Chiuaula municipal market, the largest wholesale and retail market in the city of Lichinga, capital of Niassa province.
The flames have consumed several stalls and shops among the almost 700 outlets in the facility, some of which are thought not to be complying wholly with the rules.
A short circuit in an electrical system has been put forward as the most likely cause of the fire.
The fire started at about 5:00 a.m., by which time most of the shops were open for the sale of agricultural, food and industrial products, and clothing and household items.
Firefighters from the National Public Salvation Service [SENSAP] faced difficulties quelling the flames because the fire started in the centre of the market, ‘Notícias’ has learned.
Meanwhile, local ‘Jornal Faísca’ reports on its Facebook page (below)that the firefighters from the Aeroportos de Moçambique were activated because the SENSAP only has one operational vehicle in Lichinga.
