On Wednesday, twenty-four hours after a Council of Ministers sitting in the city of Pemba met administrators and leaders of the districts affected by the attacks with a view to identifying solutions to the atrocities in the province, the as-yet unidentified armed groups attacked two villages (Chicuaia Nova and Litingina) in Nangade district in the north of Cabo Delgado, Carta de Moçambique reports.
According to Carta, the first village targeted by Wednesday’s attacks was Litingina, which is said to have been raided at around 10:00 pm. The attack, according to the source, resulted in one death (a man) and two injured. However, the raid lasted only a short time, due to the “prompt response” of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS).
The group next attacked the village of Chicuaia Nova, ess than one kilometre away. There, Carta sources confirmed, the group killed an elderly man and set fire to huts, local shops, appliances, food products and bicycles.
Sources suggest that the worst was again averted by the exchange of fire between the group and the FDS, leading village residents to take refuge in the woods.
Last Saturday, February 15, the insurgents attacked Nangololo village in Meluco district on National Road 380, which connects the EN1 to districts in central and northern areas of the province. The village is less than 20 km from the so called ‘ADPP Intersection’, where insurgents had claimed lives some days earlier.
Witnesses told ‘Carta’ that the incursion started around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday and resulted in one death (by beheading) and another victim seriously injured, as well as extensive damage to property.
The situation resulted in the suspension of traffic from Macomia headquarters to the bridge over the Montepuez River during the morning, drivers becoming aware of smoke from burning houses.
A Cabo Delgado provincial government report presented a few days ago revealed that more than 156,000 people had been affected by the attacks, with 76 schools and four health centre destroyed or vandalised.
