At least six citizens, of Asian origin, five Chinese and one Korean, are currently in quarantine in the city of Nampula after arriving at Nampula International Airport. ‘Carta de Moçambique’ reports.
All six citizens were isolated after being screened on landing at Nampula International Airport on Friday afternoon. Preliminary tests carried out after disembarking did not however reveal any coronavirus infection.
The disease has killed more than 1,600 people in China and infected thousands.
Secretary of State for Nampula Mety Gondola revealed details of the operation to the press in the country’s third-largest city on Friday afternoon.
At the moment, the six Asians are quarantined in their places of residence, similar to the first case, registered in Maputo, where citizens are observing their “voluntary quarantine” in a hotel in the capital.
Gondola said the quarantine period aimed to prevent the spread of the disease in the province and country. In contrast to the more usual 14 day isolation, the Secretary of State for Nampula has laid down a minimum period of a month, those involved to be monitored by health sector professionals as a precaution.
Gondola said there was no cause for alarm and that a team of doctors was monitoring the situation.
Nampula is Mozambique’s most populous province, with more than six million residents.
Without revealing what quarantine capacity the city and province of Nampula actually had, Gondola nevertheless said that the province was still a position to receive visitors from all corners of the world.Carta de Moçambique
