According to data from United Nations agencies, the cyclone caused at least 786 deaths and affected 2.9 million people in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
The death toll from Cyclone Idai and the floods that followed has risen to 493, Mozambican authorities announced today. The latest balance sheet, presented at the Beira city’s relief operations center, also numbers 1,523 injured and 839,748 people affected by the March 14 natural disaster.
The United Nations also estimated on Thursday that 75,000 pregnant women were affected by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique and that 7,000 of 45,000 expected deliveries in the coming months could register potentially fatal complications.
“We estimate that more than 75,000 pregnant women have been affected by the cyclone, with more than 45,000 expected deliveries over the next six months, 7,000 of which could report potentially fatal complications,” warned Andrea Wojnar, a United Nations Fund for the Population (UNFPA) representative in Mozambique.
The warning comes after Wojnar visited communities in Sofala province’s Dondo district.
As a result, the UNFPA has estimated funds needed to provide contraceptives, evidence-collection kits and reproductive health services, and assist in the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, at over US$9 million (about EUR 8 million).
