A freight train has killed a hippopotamus crossing a railway line in central Mozambique’s Sofala province, a Mozambique Railways (CFM) source told Lusa on Tuesday.
“The accident occurred at 11:20 p.m. in Nova Macieira, near the Dondo railway station, and caught everyone by surprise,” explained CFM director for the centre of Mozambique, Boaventura.
The train was travelling from the city of Beira to Moatize in the province of Tete, when, about 30 kilometres into its journey, the driver spotted a hippopotamus about to cross the line.
The animal would have died immediately from the severity of the impact, Mahaze said, adding: “Nobody could explain what the animal was doing there, because there is no river nearby.”
There was no damage to the locomotive, however, and, the body of the hippopotamus being thrown clear, railroad traffic continued unimpeded.
