A group of armed men who have been carrying out attacks in Mocímboa da Praia in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, have surrendered to Defence and Security Forces in the region, AIM reports.
The individuals say they decided to surrender so as to avoid being labelled terrorists, and in compliance with the appeal issued by Bernardino Rafael, the commander-in-chief of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM).
Last week, AIM reports, two members of this group, one a foreigner of Asian extraction, were killed by the FDS, and officials say they are working to apprehend three other foreigners suspected of being among the group’s leaders.
The individuals referred to are thought to have entered Mozambique from Swaziland via Namaacha and to have travelled to Nampula by bus from the ‘Junta’ bus terminal in Maputo, and then in another bus to Pemba and from there to Mocímboa da Praia.
A source says they arrived a few kilometres from the village of Mocímboa da Praia, where were greeted by youngsters on motorcycles who took them into the bush.
Operations carried out since the attacks in October last year have resulted in the arrest of 470 people, 370 of whom faced criminal proceedings, the remaining 100 being released for lack of evidence.
Of those involved, 314 are Mozambicans, 52 Tanzanians, one Somali and three Ugandans. Seven firearms and 554 rounds of ammunition were seized, along with vehicles used in the raids.
