The Governor of Zambézia, Pio Matos, says that the project to exploit heavy sands in shallow waters along the coast of the province, from Pebane to Chinde, will neither cause significant damage to the environment nor adversely affect the Port of Macuse.
Pio Matos was responding to a question from Rádio Moçambique when he visited the resettlement camp for families affected by the future Port of Macuse, whose construction will begin in the middle of next year.
Chinese companies hope to excavate along almost the entire length of the province’s coast to extract heavy sands from Chinde, Inassunge, Quelimane, Namacurra, Maganja da Costa to Pebane, which could pose risks to environmental health.
Given the situation, the Zambézia government this Monday stated that there would be no significant environmental damage from these projects, adding that the intention was to exploit natural resources in a sustainable way for the continued development of the province.
Meanwhile, the construction of the 68 houses for the families to be resettled in Supinho will be completed by the end of February, 2024, making way for the construction of the port of Macuse and the Macuse-Chitima railway line.
The Governor of Zambézia says that the project will boost economic development.
