Thai Mozambique Logística already has US$500 million available to start work on the deep-water dry port of Macuse, Zambézia province, in the middle of next year.
The announcement was made in Quelimane at the launch ceremony of the Chitima-Macuse Rail-Port Project , budgeted at more than 2.7 billion meticais, on Tuesday.
Of the amount needed to build the deep-water dry port and the railway logistics corridor connecting Macuse in Namacurra, Zambézi province, to Chitima in Tete province, the shareholders of Thai Mozambique Logística have already raised 500 million to start construction of the port.
Forty percent of the concession’s shareholders are Mozambican entities, including 20% from the Zambézia region.
The construction phase of the port is expected to generate around 3,000 direct jobs and 5,000 indirect jobs. The total cost of the work exceeds US$500 million, US$400 million of which is financed and the remainder in capital.
More than 30% (US$150 million) will be spent on supplies from Zambézia, generating a direct impact on the economy.
In the first phase, the port, which will occupy 2.4 km2 on the Macuse side and 2.9 km2 on the Supinho side, will export two million tons of wood from Portucel, be able to accommodate ships carrying up to 60,000 tons, and will have a logistics services park, fuel supply terminal and other components.
The shareholder representative of Thai Mozambique Logística, Manuel Latifo, said that the resettlement of the 70 families affected by the project will be completed by February next year.
The president of the Zambézia Business Council, Chawal Naparia, said that local companies should be the largest suppliers of construction material, goods and services for operators of the port works.
The governor of Zambézia, Pio Matos, called the project “structuring” for the province’s economic growth.
