Mozambique: Chapas' stoppage brings back bad memories for commuters
Screen grab: Miramar
The district of Mossuril, in Nampula, named by the National Institute of Meteorology as the current epicentre of Cyclone Gombe, is currently experiencing communication problems with the other districts in the province, making it difficult to collect information on the evolution of the weather system.
The scenario is repeated in other high risk districts, such as Ilha de Moçambique and Liupo.
The authorities had their last communication with Liupo district at around 03:00 a.m. today, via the only mobile phone network then operational, but now offline.
Other districts of Nampula exhibit a scenario of intermittent wind and rain, both tending to intensify.
There are already reports of destruction in the district of Angoche, for example.
In Mogincual, winds are still strong, but have abated since last night. The aftermath is considerable destruction of public and private infrastructure.
