Mozambique: Climate groups slam 'empty speeches', fruitless summits, want COP28 boycott
About 400 families in the 25 de Junho, Sangral and Motaze 10 neighbourhoods in Maputo province’s Boane district are in urgent need of basic assistance, AIM reports.
Altogether, 1,648 families were affected by the storm that struck homes, schools and other infrastructure last Saturday, causing seven deaths. The storm’s effects join those of the drought affecting Boane, which has so far destroyed about 3,000 hectares of crops.
Speaking to the press in the area about 30 kilometres west of the Mozambican capital yesterday, former finance minister Manuel Chang noted that it was not easy to predict the course of natural phenomena.
Leading a visit by the Frelimo parliamentary bench, Chang said he regretted the deaths caused by the storm.
“We came in solidarity with the families who have lost loved ones. No matter what action you take, it is difficult to predict such situations,” he said, noting with satisfaction the population’s eagerness to rebuild after the disaster.
Boane administrator Teresa Mauaie said the government was distributing eight tons of corn flour, 1,800 kg of beans and basic toiletries to victims of the gale.
Mauaie said that these basic products were not enough for all those affected, so solidarity campaigns would continue to targeting national and international donors.
“It isn’t possible to cover all the affected families because we don’t have enough. But there is an ongoing solidarity campaign,” he said.
In the affected neighbourhoods, collapsed houses and uprooted trees, overturned containers and mangled zinc sheets bore testimony to the strength of the winds.
