A major fire at the Beira Flip-Flops factory has destroyed a large part of its warehouse and inventory. So far, the cause of the fire that broke out yesterday in the building in the Pioneiros neighbourhood remains unknown.
According to a witness, the fire started in the factory warehouse around 9 o’clock in the morning, when most of the workers were inside.
The firefighters found it difficult to control the fire because of the highly flammable material stored there, but it was eventually brought under control by 2:30 pm.
Factory workers in the meantime managed to move most of the product to safety.
The Beira Flip-Flops factory is Chinese-owned. Jason Guo, one of the owners, said it was still premature to talk about the cause of the fire or suggest any assessment of the scale of damages.
Reports however suggest an electrical short circuit may have caused the fire, which caused panic among neighbouring residents.
