“The Defense and Security Forces are on guard and we are doing everything we can to resolve this matter,” said Filipe Nyusi, moments after his arrival in the district of Mocímboa da Praia, in the province of Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique.
The Mozambican head of state appealed to the people to raise levels of vigilance, preventing further youth from being coerced by this “group.”
“There is no brother or neighbour who kills someone and is considered a friend. If he kills the other must be considered an enemy,” added Nyusi and appealed for everyone to remain calm.
Besides Mocímboa da Praia, Nyusi visited the district of Palma, where he reiterated during a popular rally that the Defense and Security Forces will do everything to protect the population.
“No Mozambican should be killed while this government exists. We will not allow, we will protect our people until the last citizen,” concludes Nyusi.
The districts of Mocímboa da Praia and Palma have been hit by violence carried out by armed groups, allegedly of Islamic inspiration.
Since October 2017, when the first attack was recorded in the village of Mocímboa da Praia, dozens of people have already lost their lives.
Only in the latest wave of violence since May 27, at least 29 people, 11 alleged attackers and two members of the security forces have died.
Hundreds of homes and properties have been burned forcing families to flee from the districts affected by violence.
