Mozambican filmmaker Pedro Pimenta has been invited to be a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States, responsible for the Oscar awards.
“It is a great honor for all of us,” Mozambican intellectual José Luis Cabaço posts on Facebook.
Pimenta is one of the 928 professionals chosen by the Academy for having “made a distinctive contribution to the cinema”.
The group includes filmmakers, actors, writers, producers, musicians, executives and makeup artists.
In the list, the Academy makes reference to Pimenta’s films “The Island of the Spirits” and “Memories of Dreams”.
Pimenta will be the first Mozambican member of the prestigious academy, founded in Los Angeles, California in 1927.
Pimenta appears among the Africans Danai Gurira (Zimbabwe), Tendeka Matatu (South Africa), Mohamed Siam (Egypt) and Femi Odugbemi (Nigeria). Brazilians Alice Braga, Maria Augusta Ramos and Carlinhos Brown are also part of the group.
