Drought in the south of Mozambique is affecting sugar production in the Manhiça district of Maputo province, southern Mozambique.
Low water levels in the Corrumana dam, in Moamba, have reduced the amount of water available to irrigate the Tongaat Hulett sugar company’s fields in Xinavane, meaning sugar production will fall significantly from the 168,700 tons registered in 2015.
Açucareira de Xinavane’s Felizarda Oliveira describes the situation as serious, and the governor of Maputo province, Raimundo Diomba, who visited the company last week, said that the lack of water is a challenge to search for alternatives.
