Deputy Minister of National Defence Patricio Jose has said the government would consider a request to arm veterans of the national liberation struggle in order to combat armed Renamo men, adding that he would give a response as soon as appropriate.
Addressing a Defence Sector Human Resources meeting in Matola, Jose described the request made by the Secretary General of the Association of National Liberation Combatants during Victory Day celebrations in Pemba last Tuesday as legitimate.
“It is a concern of the fighters as citizens of this country. It is a legitimate way of putting the problem, and is a concern that helps us to realise the seriousness of the situation we are in,” he said.
Regarding the prevailing political and military situation in the centre of the country, the deputy minister reiterated that Defence and Security Forces were doing everything possible to restore peace in the country.
The two-day human resources meeting in Maputo discussed the management and training of defence sector staff. As for the human resources component, Jose stressed the need to focus on training in order to improve service delivery.
