Fruit delivery to prisoners in Maputo Provincial Penitentiary has been banned as part of measures aimed at preventing the Covid-19 pandemic. But relatives of the inmates are concerned.
Behind these walls there is life. There are about 20,000 prisoners in the country’s penitentiary establishments.
Preventative measures are being strengthened. At Maputo Provincial Penitentiary, formerly Cadeia Central, one of the most striking of these is the ban on fruit deliveries.
The measure took many by surprise, and fruit on its way there had to be taken back.
The concern of those with relatives in the establishment was almost immediate.
This Monday, the President of the Republic, through a Presidential Order, granted a pardon to 25 seriously or terminally ill citizens serving prison sentences in national penitentiary establishments.
