Passengers, drivers and conductors in Mozambique’s public transport ‘chapas’ are on high alert after neighbouring South Africa registered its first cases of coronavirus, TV Miramar reports.
The ‘chapa’ being a crowded place, preventive measures are also tending to multiply.
Since the first case of a patient diagnosed with coronavirus in neighbouring South Africa was confirmed, the degree of preventive measures has increased in Mozambique, adds the same source.
Everyone is unanimous in recognising that prevention is not and will not be easy in this environment.
For now, one of the main measures in public transport is to keep the windows open and share information whenever possible.
Several chapa drivers cite wearing masks as an essential ingredient in preventing the spread of the virus.
The World Health Organisation however says it is infected people or those in high-risk groups who should wear masks. In fact, a badly worn mask with consequent constant touching of the face can in itself be harmful.
Paulo António is one of the few passengers making an additional effort, and has been doing so since leaving home.
Although it broke out some time ago, there are those who are still unaware of this virus.
South Africa has confirmed 13 cases of Covid-19 infection so far.
