Mozambique: Three judges dismissed for corruption - AIM report
The Manhiça Health Foundation celebrated its 20 years of operation by debating the future of scientific research and the challenges of research funding in Mozambique in Maputo on Monday.
Speaking to national researchers, Ministry of Health officials and representatives from other African countries, symposium chair Eusebio Mallet said one of the biggest challenges was access to research funding.
Speaker Tomas Salomao summed the situation up: ”We are part of the third world, where everything is a priority, from A to Z. We want to do everything first, from education, transportation and other areas, but we forget the risk of choosing the wrong priorities.”
Salomao, PCA of Standard Bank Mozambique, was invited to talk to the symposium about the challenges of sustainability and funding in health research, but used his experience as secretary general of the SADC to tell the researchers that research is not one of governments’ priorities.
The foundation’s Maternal and Child Health Director of the Health Research Centre of Manhiça, Clara Menéndez, echoed his views: “African health research institutions themselves need to implement the results of their research to help combat major diseases affecting the continent”.
