After more than two years without a single case, at least 75 people have been diagnosed with cholera in Cabo Delgado this year. Fortunately, there have been no deaths, but nine sufferers are currently still in hospital.
The situation has led local health authorities to reactivate a treatment centre and intensify efforts to curb the outbreak.
Provincial Director of Health Anastácia Lidimba told reporters that since the start of the outbreak on January 5, 75 cases have been registered.
Cholera in Cabo Delgado is associated with a lack of potable water, especially in certain neighbourhoods of the city of Pemba.
The situation has been exacerbated by poor sanitation and neglect of basic hygiene during the rainy season.
