Former Frelimo presidents Joaquim Chissano and Armando Guebuza declined to comment on the message of the Mozambican Youth Organization, which said it supported Filipe Nyusi for another five years in Frelimo’s leadership.
On the eve of the 12th Frelimo congress, scheduled for 23 to 28 September 2022, the ruling party already has support wings, with one of the backdrops being the election of the party president, after Filipe Nyusi was elected to lead Frelimo on 29 March, 2015, by the Central Committee, following the resignation of Armando Guebuza from the position.
And Nyusi has the end of his term in sight, not least because Number 5 of Article 84 of the Frelimo Statutes stipulates that “the President elected by the Central Committee ends his term in Congress”.
In this context, the Mozambican Youth Organisation, the Frelimo youth wing, was clear when it said last weekend that it supported Filipe Nyusi in the leadership of the comrades’ party for another five years.
“We want to make known our gratitude for the strength, the teachings that we received from our comrade President during his term; they were decisive for our way of being and being in society. Comrade President, we are prepared and firm with our leadership, because we know that it works with you. Comrade President, here, now, we want to reaffirm our unconditional vote that you continue to lead our party for another five years. We are with you towards the 12th Congress,” said Anchia Talapa, outgoing secretary general of the OJM.

Meanwhile, speaking on the sidelines of a lecture organised by the Samora Machel Foundation on the life and work of Julius Nyerere and his contribution to the independence of African countries, those who have already led Frelimo, in this case, Joaquim Chissano and Armando Guebuza, say that they are not aware of this support.
“I still haven’t heard of it,” said Joaquim Chissano, honorary president of Frelimo, responding to a question from ‘O País’.
An answer not far from that of Armando Guebuza, also honorary president of Frelimo, who was direct in saying: “I didn’t hear that”.
He did not listen, perhaps, but he was present at the second OJM congress on the day of the intervention of its outgoing secretary general, Anchia Talapa.
These pronouncements come in a context in which Filipe Nyusi ends his term as President of the Republic in 2025, and historically, whoever runs the country is, at the same time, the president of the ruling party, although neither the Constitution of the Republic nor the Frelimo statutes say that it has to be this way.
