Frelimo’s presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, is no longer the party’s interim general secretary. In fact, the position is not provided for in the party statutes.
Chapo was officially appointed and proclaimed as the party’s general secretary at the party’s school in Matola today, where the debate on the proposed electoral manifesto is taking place.
“Interim, people say. What is in the statutes is Secretary General. The Political Commission designates the Secretary General. Therefore, it is not interim, this is just what I wanted to clarify,” said one member of the party present, quoted by Radio Mozambique.
Party president Filipe Nyusi then suggested: “You are saying interim, can we remove it?” The issue went to a vote and it was determined that “it could move forward”.
Chapo had been appointed interim Secretary General at the Frelimo Central Committee session on May 13, following the resignation of Roque Silva, the same session in which he was elected the party’s presidential candidate for the October 9 general elections.
