A request for bail in the case of former Mozambican finance minister Manuel Chang will be heard in the Kempton Park court in Johannesburg today.
The South African public prosecutor is opposing bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the charges against Chang.
The court has set the bail application at Level Five, usual in cases involving fraud, corruption and money laundering. Chang’s defence however is demanding he not be considered under this level.
“After much discussion, the court validated the arrest, given that the prosecutor’s office insists that the arrest of Deputy Manuel Chang was carried out legally. The possibility of his return to provisional freedom through the payment of bail is still under discussion,” General Zacarias Cossa of the High Commission of Mozambique in South Africa said.
