This Saturday, residents of Beira will get their very own municipal stadium, built from scratch for the benefit of local clubs and the population at large.
Located in the busy Munhava neighbourhood, the stadium was built with municipality funds and cost just over 100 million meticais in its first phase, which seats 8,000 people. The final project is expected to seat 22,000 spectators.
To accommodate the additional seating, the city council plans to relocate some families.
The finished stadium will include four modern changing rooms for athletes, a specialised massage room, two changing rooms for referees, changing rooms for CAF personnel, hot tubs, an anti-doping department and a VIP box and press suites. There will also be a conference room and a refreshment area.
A further 16 premises for leasing will provide income for the second phase, which is expected to comprise more retail floorspace and other enterprises.
The official opening is scheduled for next Wednesday and will be attended by political and sports figures including President of the Municipal Council of the City of Beira Davis Simango, and President of the Mozambican Football Federation, Alberto Simango Jr., among others.
The city of Beira celebrates 111 years from its elevation to city status on the 20th of this month.
