The National Roads Administration (ANE) has admitted that it might be possible to review the tolls charged for the use of the Maputo-Ka Tembe Bridge. Initially, the measure may benefit frequent users, arrangements for whom, Ka Tembe residents say, are not acceptable.
Recently, “O País” featured a report in which Ka Tembe residents expressed concern about the 160 metical fee charged for light vehicles, including motorcycles.
The discount system currently in application for frequent users is said not to be working, and with no money to make the crossing during the month, residents simply abandon their vehicles at one end of the bridge.
The National Roads Administration, which took over the infrastructure when the old Maputo South concern was wound up, says it has a file on finding a better solution on the table.
ANE Director General Cesar Macuácua has said that the concession of the Maputo-Ka Tembe bridge and Maputo ring road to toll-takers is irreversible. Once the tolls are operating on the ring road, part of the funds raised will be used for public lighting at points that are not currently lit, he added.
