270 people drowned in 2018 in Mozambique

Police of the Republic of Mozambique said on Wednesday that 270 people have died of drowning in the southeast African country in 2018.
Out of these victims, 134 were killed by drowning while swimming, while the rest deaths resulted from shipwrecks of registered vessels in several locations of the country, police spokesman Inacio Dina said at a press briefing in the capital, Maputo.
According to the spokesman, fishermen and swimmers continued failing to observe prevention measures.
The police “will intensify awareness campaigns for swimmers and fishermen to pay more attention to safety recommendations,” said Dina, adding that more lifeguards will be positioned at places where drowning frequently occurs.
The spokesman said that maritime incidents appear to be frequent due to ignorance of communications, and that the challenge is to change people’s attitudes.
