Five tons of Enterprise and Rainbow Chicken brand processed meat products imported from South Africa and suspected of being contaminated with Listeria bacteria were burned yesterday in Matola municipality’s Siduava neighbourhood.
According to the provincial delegate of the National Inspection of Economic Activities (INAE) in Maputo, Rodrigues Churi, the five tons burned were seized in Shoprite stores in Massinga, Xai-Xai, Macie, Boane, Matola and Maputo city, in the south of the country.
Churi added that the inspection of smaller establishments was ongoing, and all products of these brands would be seized for future destruction.
“The work of incineration is ongoing. We started with the supermarkets and will end with informal vendors,” he said.
Churi said that incineration was a precautionary measure taken since the food brands identified were suspected of causing the deaths of 180 people in neighbouring South Africa.
“It was not necessary to test the products to determine if they were actually contaminated, because they had already been described as toxic to human health,” Churi explained.
Noticias has established that incineration of the products also took place in central and northern regions, and that the process would continue today and was scheduled to be completed by tomorrow.
Border checks continue to ensure that no further products of these brands enter the country.
