Mozambique: Public Prosecutor opposed to building on mangrove area
O País
Section VI is the last part of the Maputo Ring Road project and comprises the section linking the Praça 16 de Junho and National Road No. 4.
It runs through part of the Luiz Cabral neighbourhood, and continuing work requires resettling about 500 families. At the moment, Maputo Sul, the company managing the project, says it does not have the money to carry out any resettlement of the population.
According to China EximBank’s contract to finance the project, the contractor is not responsible for either the removal of infrastructure or the resettlement of the population concerned, which responsibility in fact lies with the Mozambican government.
On the other hand, O Pais reports that work on the Tchumene junction has ground to a halt, and “once again, the difficulty lies with TRAC, the National Road No.4 concessionaire”.
The problem means that Maputo Sul can give no date for completion, adds the same source.
As for the Maputo-Catembe bridge, work is proceeding normally, and it is hoped that the bridge will be ready for hand-over by early May.
