The Mozambican Ministry of Labour and Social Security has announced that it will grant the residents of Nampula in northern Mozambique a special holiday on Wednesday for the municipal by-election.
The special holiday “does not cover workers whose activity does not allow of interruption” in the “public interest”, the statement clarifies.
Nampula municipality is holding a by-election on Wednesday, with five candidates hoping to succeed Mayor Mahamudo Amurane, who was shot dead outside his home on October 4, 2017.
With 296,590 registered voters, voting will take place at 401 polling stations from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., counting of votes to start soon thereafter .
Whoever wins, his or her mandate will be shorter than the usual four years, since local elections in Mozambique are scheduled for October 15, 2018.
