Mozambican and Frelimo president Filipe Nyusi announced yesterday that he intended to lead the country until 2025, with gross domestic product (GDP) growth rates of seven to 10 percent a year from 2020.
“In the 20-25 agenda, we project minimum annual growth remaining between seven and 10 percent,” the only candidate for party leadership at the Frelimo congress that began yesterday said.
Growth would be based on “four pillars”, he said: agriculture, energy, infrastructure and tourism.
Filipe Nyusi was speaking at the opening of the 11th Frelimo Congress, where he said the country should fight for economic independence.
According to this year’s population census, Mozambique now has around 27 million inhabitants, a figure expected to reach 46 million by 2040.

“We must look at this projection seriously and weigh both the positive and the challenging in it. We need to think strategically,” President Nyusi said.
“This is only way will we realise the opportunities created by population growth and face up to the challenge of growing demand for food, water, housing, education and transport,” he added.
“For future generations, the economy will have to run faster than demography,” the Frelimo leader concluded.
The governance programme to be presented at the 2019 elections will be one of the dossiers under discussion during the 11th Frelimo Congress, which is taking place until Sunday at the party’s headquarters in Matola, near Maputo.
