Mozambique: Urgent to revise election laws, says Chapo - Watch
The police are sending reinforcements and tightening security at government buildings in Manica, Sofala, Tete and Zambezia – four of the six provinces where Renamo threatens to seize power. Police however describe the measures as “normal”.
Voice of America has learned that about 25 armoured vehicles have been sent to central Mozambique, some for use in the military escorts on the N1, the rest on standby.
In Quelimane, residents said that armoured vehicles now patrol the streets, but a journalist on the scene described the atmosphere as “calm and normal”. In Tete, as in the Manica capital Chimoio, the streets near government buildings were closed to traffic at night.
“You can see some police patrols,” a journalist in Tete said about the security at government buildings near the city council and in Independence Square .
Opposition stronghold Beira also started the day quietly, with police conducting “normal” patrols but ready for any “anomalous assaults on buildings”, local police spokesman Daniel Macuacua said.
Manica police spokesperson Elcidia Filipe also said city administration was proceeding normally and that the environment was calm.
Talking to journalists two weeks ago, Afonso Dhlakama reaffirmed that “the formation of our government will enter into force in March, whether the first, the 15th or the 30th, but not later than that. We will rule”.
