More than 1,600 people living in Cancope, in Tete province’s Moatize district, are at risk from air pollution produced by the region’s mining activity.
The village is close to both Vale Moçambique and ICVL facilities, and its residents told Radio Mozambique they were experiencing the negative effects of pollution every day, with coal dust posing a serious threat to their health.
The two miners have reportedly declined to resettle the Cancope residents, who say that all efforts at negotiation are now exhausted and are asking the government to intervene.
