The Sofala provincial government has stopped work on the construction of an airstrip in Mwanza district in the administrative post of Nhakamuanza in the Gorongosa National Park.
The work was being undertaken by park management, and the airfield was to have served as a base for light aircraft engaged in animal monitoring and surveillance in the fight against poaching.
A Canalmoz report maintains that provincial officials had somehow linked the airfield to the ongoing military situation in the region and the fact that Renamo’s president Afonso Dhlakama is said to be in Gorongosa. While the provincial government might fear that the airstrip was somehow linked with Renamo, the alleged existence of tourmaline deposits in the region may also have played a part in their reasoning.
The track was 1 km long and 30 metres wide.
Sofala government spokesman Hélcio Canda said that the work was suspended on the grounds that no license had been presented and the National Institute of Aviation in Sofala, the provincial government and the district administration had not been informed.
