Mozambique: "Triple crisis" leaves 5.2 million in need of humanitarian assistance - UN

Mozambique on Monday announced its 14th death associated with Covid-19 and 27 new confirmed coronavirus infections, bringing the cumulative total of cases to 1,973. [You may read the full MISAU brief, in Portuguese, HERE and infographics HERE]
The 45-year-old victim was of Indian nationality, had been in Nampula Central Hospital in northern Mozambique since 30 July,and died in the early hours of Monday morning, Benigna Matsinhe, Mozambique’s deputy director of public health, said in an update on the pandemic at the Ministry of Health in Maputo.
The patient “was in the Covid-19 Isolation Centre for three days, during which time his condition worsened,” Matsinhe said.
In the previous 24 hours, the country had registered 27 new coronavirus infections, for a total 1,973, of which 1,798 were locally transmitted and 175 imported.
“Of the cases reported today, 25 are individuals of Mozambican nationality and two are foreigners, of Portuguese nationality,” Matsinhe added.
831 test were performed in the last 24 hours, she said. “Of these, 455 samples were tested in public sector laboratories and 376 samples in the private sector”.
Meanwhile, in terms of age, the newly diagnosed cases are distributed as follows:Two (02) cases are children under 5 years old, ;one (1) case is a child aged between 5 and 14 years old; four (4) cases are between 15 and 24 years old; six (6) cases are between 25 and 34 years old; six (6) cases are between 35-44 year old; two (2) cases are aged between 45 and 54 years old; five (5) cases are aged between 55 and 64 years old ; and one (1) case is over 65 years of age;
Of the total number of cases so far recorded since the first infection was announced on 22 March, the country has had 676 (342%) of these patients reported as recovered.
The majority of active cases are in Maputo City and Cabo Delgado province, with 303 and 261 people infected respectively, followed by Maputo province with 255 and Nampula with 245 infections. The remaining seven provinces of the country register less than 60 cases.

The country, which has been under a state of emergency for four months now, has conducted 60,473 tests on suspected cases since the announcement of the first, having screened over 1.6 million people.
A total of 25,839 people suspected of infection have been placed in home quarantine and 3,393 continue to be monitored by health authorities.
Worldwide, the Covid-19 pandemic has so far claimed more than 689,000 lives and infected more than 18.1 million people in 196 countries and territories.
