Meanwhile, in the central city of Beira, according to the head of operations of the municipal police, Manuel Gimo, cited in Friday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”, 23 people have been detained for violating the state of emergency norms, concerning the consumption of alcohol.
Gimo said they were arrested in clandestine bars or stalls selling alcoholic drinks. Under the state of emergency all bars must close.
Restaurants and bottle stores, however, are allowed to remain open. Gimo complained that some Beira citizens go to restaurants not to eat a meal, but to buy drinks which they then consume in their cars.
Gimo added that last week the municipal police seized 25 minibuses used for passenger transport because their drivers were not wearing face masks. 92 motorbikes were confiscated for the same reason.
