Five members of Renamo military junta in Sofala arrested

Five members of the self-styled Renamo ‘military junta’ were detained last weekend by a joint force of the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) and the Mozambican Armed Defence Forces (FADM). The group was presented to the media in Beira yesterday.
According to police spokesman Daniel Macuacua, the arrest took place in the Dondo and Gorongosa districts.
The group of detainees includes Antonio Bauaze, a Renamo member of the Marromeu Municipal Assembly. Police say that body’s Renamo bench recruited young people to join the military junta, which is led by Mariano Nhongo.
Renamo senior member Antonio Bauaze was arrested along with three other members at Dondo Train Station as they were leaving Marromeu.
Bauaze is regarded as influential in Marromeu district, where he allegedly recruited young people with the promise of jobs, but later took them to the village of Macorococho in Nhamatanda district, where they underwent military training.
A fifth man, identified as Xadreque Perequera, 50, was arrested in the municipal village of Gorongosa.
During his presentation by the police, Perequera confessed to belonging to the Renamo military junta and participation in assaults on people and goods on the public highway, including one in Marínguè district on the occupants of an ambulance, causing injuries and damage to the vehicle.
