Mozambique: 20 B.O. prisoners on hunger strike for a week – RM

Twenty inmates in Maputo’s highest security prison, known as B.O., have been on hunger strike last Friday, Radio Mozambique has learned.

The National Commission on Human Rights is trying to ascertain the truth of the matter, but reliable information indicates that 20 B.O. inmates have gone without food since last Friday.

The reason for the alleged hunger strike is not yet known, but President of the National Commission of Human Rights, Luis Bitone, says that a team has already been constituted to work on the case.

“The information came to us from unofficial sources. At this moment we are contacting the competent authorities for more information, but even so we have already deployed a team to the field to find out what is happening. What we cannot do is take a stand. We are a public entity, and must work with facts we gather on the ground. If we find out that the information is correct, there are steps to follow to establish the causes. If the causes are illegal, we can ask for the accountability of the persons concerned, but at this moment we have no confirmation of the information coming to us. We only have information that we must investigate on the ground and only within the next few days can we say anything,” Bitone said.
