The African Development Bank (ADB) yesterday (Tuesday 20-08) disbursed US$45 million (€41 million) to support the reconstruction of cyclone-destroyed social infrastructure in the Mozambican provinces of Sofala, in the centre of the country, and Cabo Delgado in the north.
“This grant funding is already responding to the amount of support that was declared at the time [by donors], so we are on a good footing,” said Mozambican Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane, quoted today by Daily News
An AfDB representative explained that the amount is part of the institution’s commitment to agricultural, transport and meteorological services, and to lend assistance to the reconstruction office.
In March, Cyclone Idai struck central Mozambique, causing 604 deaths and affecting about 1.8 million people.
Shortly thereafter, the north of the country was devastated by Cyclone Kenneth, which killed 45 people and affected another 250,000.
