A group of Mozambicans are working in South Korea as interns in one of the largest shipyards in the world. Some of them are young graduates, while others already had some experience in the labour market.
They are trained in engineering and are in South Korea as guests of Samsung Heavy Industries shipbuilding, which is producing the floating liquefied natural gas production platform for the Rovuma Basin off Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique.
“It will be a good professional experience for us. We are learning to work as a team, and this is one of the values we will be able to take back to Mozambique with us,” Vânia Coutinho, one of the trainees at the Samsung shipyard, said.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, the young Mozambicans are enjoying the opportunity of following the process of building the first floating platform to be installed in the Rovuma Basin.
“We’ve been here for four months and it’s two months to the end of our internship. We are learning a lot and learning the practical part according to each module we are studying,” trainee Helena Buana said.
Adérito Sacama, another trainee, said that “most of the things I learned here have to do with the project (construction of the floating platform). It’s been a plus for me. I have learned a lot of new things I can take back to Mozambique”.
All of the interns believe their experience will help develop their country.
Another young Mozambican at the shipyard, electrical engineer Liudimil Portugal, has come from the National Hydrocarbons Company, and tell us about his experience.
“The work itself is challenging. Every day there are new things to learn, always something new to do. My expectation is that we will complete the project successfully and take it home with us. Above all, it’s the education we’re getting.”
Liudimil Portugal has been working on the construction of the project from the beginning, and has two more years in Korea to go.
