President of the Assembly of the Republic Veronica Macamo said yesterday (04-06) that “if our colleague Chang comes to Mozambique today, he will be arrested, because that has already been requested. There are a lot of people who think that when he arrives, he is going home, but that is not the case”.
Questioned by journalists about the waiver of parliamentary immunity of deputy Manuel Chang, detained in South Africa but who may be extradited to Mozambique to answer corruption crimes, Veronica clarified: “There is something which many people do not know: we [the Parliament] have relaxed the immunity of colleague Chang”.
“So, if the colleague Chang comes to Mozambique today he’s going to be arrested because that has been requested. There are a lot of people who think that when he arrives, he goes home., but it’s not the case, it’s not effectively that, “said the President of the Assembly of the Republic.
“The issue of immunity is a process that has to be carried out, and one has to defend oneself. Imagine the constraints that we have had, but we are working towards this. Effectively, there is not the idea that nothing happened. If he gets there today he’s going to be arrested, because we have effectively relaxed his immunity,” she said.
Regarding Chang’s mandate as a Frelimo deputy Macamo said: “His seat will be replaced when he actually loses his mandate. He loses his mandate through a process. A person has the right to defend themselves. Everything is following its proper procedure.”Source: A Verdade
