Mozambique: CTA welcomes jump in World Bank’s ‘Doing Business’ index

The Confederation of Business Associations of Mozambique (CTA), the country’s largest employers’ organisation, on Friday welcomed the country’s improvement in the World Bank’s “Doing Business” index.

The country rose from 137th to 135th out of all 190 countries included in the survey.

“This rise, registered in the current ranking is important, not so much the number of positions the country rose, but the reversal of the downward trend the country had seen in this ranking in the last three years,” the CTA said in a report analysing the results of the index.

The annual report, which ranks countries on business-friendliness, regulatory architecture and absence of red tape, added that the improved classification was a sign of optimism for the international market and congratulated the government for its dialogue with the public sector, saying this also contributed to Mozambique’s advancing in the index.

However, the CTA said that Mozambique’s high business costs had prevented a bigger leap, adding that the negative impact of fiscal consolidation had led to the readjustment of prices of some public services and the rise and introduction of several taxes.
