Mozambique: Police dogs help seize over 23,000 kg of drugs across the country

Police dogs in Mozambique allowed for over 23,800 kilograms of illegal drugs to be seized across the country from January to September this year, the country’s police chief said on Monday, quoted by the local press.

Bernardino Rafael, cited by daily newspaper O País, said the use of trained narcotics dogs had substantially increased the force’s capacity to fight drug dealing.

“We seized twenty three thousand eight hundred and sixty nine kilos of a variety of drugs with the use of the can ine unit,” said the general commander of the Mozambican police force (PRM).

Rafael also noted that the force’s “four-legged colleagues,” had also helped detect 302 firearms in the first nine months of the year and 1,474 munitions across the country.

“That is why it is our priority to increase our capacity and specialisation of canine unit officers and the dogs themselves, given their increasing usefulness,” he said.

Between January and September of this year, the Mozambican police recorded 15,000 crimes, of which 12,000 have been solved, Rafael said.
