Angola’s new wage scale for civil servants is due to come into force in January 2019, a government move which aims to put an end to the pay gap, according to a statement published on Friday.
According to a statement issued following a council of ministers meeting on Thursday, a draft law including a 57% increase in the minimum wage for civil servants has been approved and sent to parliament.
The country’s minister for public administration, work and social security, Jesus Maiato, said the move would drive an increase in purchasing power which had been lost due to the country’s accumulated inflation rate.
The governor of Angola’s central bank (BNA) recently said that the country was still suffering the effects of the 2008 economic crisis and that Angola continued ot face many challenges.
According to World Bank figures reported by Lusa recently, Angola ended 2017 with public debt equivalent to more than 71% of its gross domestic product (GDP).
