Police called a press conference early on Thursday to announce that the 14-year-old girl abducted in the early hours of Tuesday in the Gorongosa district of Sofala had been found by police in Bongolangoma Canda, in the same district, about 40 kilometres from where she was abducted.
The girl was walking in a forest in the company of three individuals who presumably kidnapped her, local authorities told police.
“When they learned of the approach of the police force at around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, the alleged abductors fled, leaving the victim. It is premature at this time to state whether the other victim, the three-year-old girl, was in the same group or not, or whether she is still with the fugitives. At this time, police experts are investigating the case, with the help of the 14-year-old. We will provide more detail on this case in due course,” Sofala police spokeswoman Sididi Paulo explained.
Police say that the perpetrators of the abductions in Gorongosa have not made contact with the relatives of the victims.
“All the information on the alleged kidnappers has been provided by witnesses and the population who saw them walking in the woods, leaving no doubt that the abductors live in Gorongosa. The motives behind the abduction are still unknown and the kidnappers have not yet contacted the relatives of the victims,” Paulo said.
