More than 30,000 cattle are at risk of contracting foot and mouth disease following an outbreak in Mozambique’s Nampula, Tete and Gaza provinces, national veterinary director Américo da Conceição said on Friday. According to the official, the Mozambican government has tightened surveillance measures to contain the outbreak, including a ban on the movement of cattle and other livestock to or from all regions affected by the disease.
The ban covers movement of livestock, meat products and manure from cattle, goats, sheep and pigs.
“We have imposed a blanket ban on the movement of livestock in the affected areas and we are appealing to all breeders, dealers and all those involved in commercial activities in order to avoid the movement of cattle, goats, sheep and pigs,” da Conceição told APA.
He explained that Mozambique has imported 250,000 doses of the vaccine for affected cattle at a cost of more than US$500,000.
Foot and mouth is a highly contagious and often fatal disease that affects livestock such as cattle, pigs, goats and sheep and can be transmitted from wild buffalo.
Another southern African country, Botswana, recently reported an outbreak of the same disease.
