Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday condemned the increasing use of violence to solve social problems.
Speaking at a rally in the KaMavota urban district on the third day of his tour of Maputo City, Nyusi urged citizens to look towards dialogue, and never to encourage hatred and envy.
“When we have problems we should channel them to the relevant structures”, he said. “If we have problems, let us resort to dialogue and not to violence”.
Nyusi warned against agitators who promote instability, burn down houses, and use children to barricade roads, as a way of demanding that particular problems be solved. “Problems will always exist”, he said, “but resorting to violence to solve them should not be the Mozambican way of doing things”.
Since Maputo is the capital, it should set an example of good practices of people living together. “We must face our problems frontally, by talking about them”, he insisted.
The rejection of violence was also a key theme in the messages presented at the rally by various religious congregations. In particular, a speaker from the muslim community concerned the recent murderous attacks against unarmed civilians in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
The attacks are believed to be the work of islamic fundamentalists, but they have been disowned by all the mainstream islamic groups in Mozambique. The muslim speaker at KaMavota demanded that those behind the Cabo Delgado attacks should be identified and severely punished, since they are working against a society which has been trying to ensure peace for its citizens.
At the same rally, Nyusi recalled that Friday s World Ocean Day, and urged citizens to treat the sea with respect, since it is a source of wealth for Mozambicans.
This year the celebrations of the date are being held around the theme “preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean”.
