The Lúrio University of Mozambique, in partnership with the Union of Portuguese Capital Cities (UCCLA) and a Portuguese educational establishment, has trained 20 new tour guides for the Island of Mozambique.
“What we found was that most of the guides could speak about, but not interpret” the heritage site for tourists, Armando Chiluvane, coordinator of the Tourism and Hospitality course at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Lúrio University, revealed in a statement.
The intensive training at the Nampula-based institution lasted eight months and was headed by Victor Ambrósio, a Portuguese teacher from the Estoril High School of Hospitality and Tourism (ESHTE).
The initiative comes as part of the celebrations of the island’s elevation to city status 200 years ago.
On Tuesday, the Mozambican government announced that a sum of 31 million meticais (EUR 444,000 euros) had been earmarked for the reconstruction of the city’s sea wall.
Occupying an area of 245 square kilometres, the island gave its name to the country and was its first capital, boasting notable historical monuments such as the Fortress of San Sebastian.
Vasco da Gama arrived there in 1498 and established a stopover on the trade route between Portugal and India. Today it is an island city in Nampula province in the north of the country, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991.
