Maria Alice Mabota (8 April 1949 – 12 October 2023) was a Mozambican human rights activist and president of the Mozambique Human Rights League.
Renowned Mozambican lawyer and social activist Alice Mabote served as president of the Human Rights League of Mozambique, where she stood out for her strong social intervention.
Maria Alice Mabota was born in 1949, at the Hospital de Sºao José de Lhanguene, now called Hospital Geral José Macamo, in the City of Maputo.
In 1995, together with other Mozambican activists and intellectuals, Mabota founded the Human Rights League of Mozambique.
In 2019, Alice Mabota presented her candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic, in the general elections that took place on December 15th. The formalization was done through the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD), which, in this way, made history with Mabota as the first woman to ever to run for President of Mozambique.
Alice Mabota died in a hospital in South Africa on 12 October 2023, at the age of 74
